Energy is the foundation for green building. Energy codes define the minimum acceptable standards for a climate zone. In today's world of climate change and high energy prices, it is critical that buildings use as few fossil fuels (including coal generated electricity) as possible to "futureproof" the home against unpredictable and rapidly rising prices.
Health And Sustainability
Materials really do matter to the health of occupants and the environment, but finding out what is in a product—and why—is not easy.
Products also have to perform as intended, so there are often tradeoffs between performance and the most sustainable materials.
Choices can be tough

- Most environmentally sustainable materials used in products
- Environmental product declarations that can reveal the life-cycle impacts of materials
- Standards and third-party certifications that provide important VOC criteria and other health and performance metrics
- Chemicals of concern in building materials.
- We can debate all day about how to calculate the environmental and health impacts of products, but they all have a footprint. So using less is always a good idea—as long as that doesn't compromise performance.
- Doing more with less takes knowledge and attention
Total Eco Friendly
Buildings are part of the community: they can contribute to or detract from their surroundings. In some projects, the social imperative is obvious (a nonprofit job center in an underserved neighborhood). In other buildings, the social justice impact is more subtle. The location of an office building influences who will have access to the jobs it houses, for example.
